June 6, 2002 -- Bali, Indonesia, during the PrepComm IV.

Sustainable Energy is a crucial and cross-cutting issue for sustainable development and thus one of the main priorities for the World Summit. The Heinrich Böll Foundation is planning a three panel discussion, highlighting global challenges in the energy sector. Invited are members of government delegations, of international organisations, as well as NGO representatives, who will discuss the basic elements of such a strategy and the responsibilities of North and South.

The Heinrich Boell Foundation has invited international experts of renown and distinguished leaders to explore the scope of global policy principles in the field of innovative energy development. After a Welcoming Speech by the Foundation’s Executive Director Barbara Unmüssig there will be a Keynote Speech by Jürgen Trittin, German Federal Minister for Environment, on the topic “Sustainable Energy Policy – German Experiences and Prospects for North-South-Cooperation in the wake of Johannesburg“ and an Address by Brazilian Minister for Environment José Carlos Carvalho (invited), “Brazilian Perspectives on Sustainable Energy".

Following, there will be a panel discussion on the expectations of the South and how to close the supply gap with regard to climate change and possible alternatives to current energy policies. The energy expert Dr. Felix C. Matthes will present some draft ideas of a study that is being carried out by the German Oeko-Institut to make expert-recommendations for an innovative Global Energy Strategy.
