JOHANNESBURG:
SUCCESS OR FAILURE?

Public Debate
Date: September 30
Time: 8pm
Venue: Heinrich Boell Foundation Head Office
With: Martin Khor, Third World Network, Malaysia; Nicola Bullard, Focus on the Global South, Thailand; Nika Greger, Deutscher Naturschutzring; Reinhard Loske, Green Party, Germany.
Note: The debate will have simultanous translation English-German

The World Summit on Sustainable Development was intended not only to revise global performance on implementing Agenda 21, the key outcome of the Rio Earth Summit 1992, but also to produce new impetus on pursuing sustainable development and to tackle new emerging issues such as how to make globalisation work for more fairness in a fragile world.

Did the World Summit live up to the expectations? What has been achieved to reduce poverty, foster development and protect the environment? What implications will the summit and its results have for the future of multilateralism? This debate tries to come up with a first analysis of the World Summit and outline the next steps on the path to a fair and sustainable world.
