The topic of this session will be recent innovative activities on the promotion of bicycle transport in South Africa, in particular the Shova Kalula National Bicycle Demonstration Program of the South African National Department of Transport. The uniqueness of the Afribike's program lies in the establishment of a permanent presence in low-income communities through the establishment of locally managed bicycle micro enterprises. Collectively these enterprises also form a delivery platform, which can be used to channel subsidised bicycles into low-income communities, as well as initiate other activities such as local cycling clubs, races, awareness and road safety campaigns. The challenges, replicability and transferability to other sectors, of this implementation method will be explored in the discussion. The session will consist of a half hour multimedia presentation with an hour's panel discussion afterwards.

Note: Like with all events taking place inside the venue of the People's Global Forum, you need to be registered for the People's Global Forum to attend this event. If you are not yet registered, you can do so at the web site of the Civil Society Secretariat.
