One day before the opening of the WSSD, the Worldwatch Institute
and the Heinrich Boell Foundation cordially invite you to a media
briefing that will bring together officials from the UN, governments
and civil society organisations to discuss upcoming World Summit
issues and what will be needed to ensure the Summits success.
The event will be based on Worldwatch research (State
of the World 2002, Vital Signs 2002, World Summit Policy
Briefs) and the Heinrich Boell Foundation's Jo'burg
Memo and will include two expert panel discussions
featuring leading figures from Government, the U.N. and non-governmental
organisations, focusing on what is at stake in Johannesburg, the
Secretary-General's Agenda (Water, Energy, Health, Agriculture and
Biodiversity) and how to govern globalisation - the role of partnerships
and international institutions beyond Johannesburg.
Speakers include: Jan Pronk, Special Envoy of the UN Secretary-General
for the World Summit; Anna Tibaijuka, Executive Director,
UNCHS (Habitat); Mohammed Valli Moosa, Minister for Environment
and Tourism, South Africa*; Calestous Juma, Harvard University
