South Africa is hoping to begin building and testing Pebble Bed
Modular Nuclear Reactors for local use and export, over 200 of them.
The fuel plant is planned for location close to Black townships,
and high value tourist areas, such as the Cradle of Humankind. The
technology has been tried elsewhere, but has never been commercially
viable. The planned reactors will also generate about 10 times more
high level radioactive waste than other types of nuclear reactors,
and are able to be used to make nuclear weapons.
All with an interest in energy; globalisation; health and safety;
radiation impacts; nuclear proliferation; labour and women's issues;
biodiversity and human rights should attend. Information will be
shared, and plans made to halt this potential development path for
South Africa and the world.
