In preparation of the World Summit on Sustainable Development, the Heinrich Böll Foundation invited a team of four experts from the South to take a critical view on the implementation of sustainable development in Germany. Team members were coming from Chile, India, Jordan and Kenya.

The project aimed at a view from a distance as a contribution to the German and international debate on paths towards sustainability. Thus, the delegation has taken a critical look on what has been done since the Rio Summit 1992 and what should be done in the future.

In order to conduct the study the team visited Germany twice for a period of a fortnight each time. Three main sectors of action are in the centre of the study: 1) Transport and Mobility, 2) Agriculture and Nature Conservation, 3) Energy Use and Climate Protection.

The project resulted in an extensive report, that gives an unusual, Southern perspective on the need for a profound change in Germanys development pattern. The Heinrich Böll Foundation underlines with this project the need for a mutual learning process on the path towards a sustainable society, in North and South.
