Thanks for listening! |

It is a campaigners purpose and delight to have textual suggestions
taken up by other people. This is not working as well as it should
in the official process for the World Summit on Sustainable Development.
There, governments continue to ignore key civil society demands
on trade justice, corporate accountability and ecological debt.
It is thus a pleasure to read something like the Jo´burg Memo
in the midst of the hectic negotiations. Here, at least, I can find
- positive - references to the work that Friends of the Earth International
has been doing in the lengthy run-up to Johannesburg. Here, at least,
I can find myself agreeing with the general thrust of the analysis
as to why the promises of Rio have been broken.... [ Complete

global, y la problemática global queda muy lejos de nosotros/as;
me parece que en el documento se abordan algunos puntos que nos
impulsan y nos dan ánimo... [ Complete

Gender Issues |
|
|
The memo was succint and dealt with traditional concerns in the
area of development. However, there is the aspect of continued marginalisation
of professions dominated by women that receives passing credit...
if at all. The KwaZulu female quiltmaker whose work makes it to
Sotheby's, New York, is my heroine. But, there are so many other
women and men who toil away for a pittance. Sustainable development
in our part of the world has to strenghten responsible trade unionism,
an insightful and thoughtful media, an education that not only focuses
on reading, writing and thinking skills... but engages pupils and
students in the reality of what makes their immediate communities
work or not work... not to mention the family. If memory serves
me well, men who became famously rich and remained so, paid attention
to every cent they spent ...( the details). Some lessons from Walt
Disney's comic character " Scrooge" might just be what
some of our Heads of State need to get their fiscal house in order. |

Local officials working for a successful Summit |

I believe that local officials could act as a strong force to push
a more advanced ecological agenda at the Earth Summit. Any ideas

Memo in Arabic? |
|
|
I have downloaded the Jo'burg memo and found it: very instructive,
not a "caucus", sober, innovative, and reasonable. How
about translating it into Arabic. 22 Arab countries plus Arab regional
governmental and non-governmental organizations will be present.
I happen to be the commentator about WSSD for the Arab League Educational,
Cultural and Scientific Organization (ALECSO). I am right now writing
a comment on WSSD and the Arabs for them. Note: As of today, there IS an Arabic version. Download
it here. |

Clear and incisive. |

Thank you for that clear, incisive memo. We need more of that straight
talk and fewer opt out clauses. |

Jo'Burg Memo in South America |
|

As a Danish advisor working in an environmental regional network
in CA and actively involved in the Rio+10 project financed by the
Danish government I highly apreciate the analysis rendered in the
Memo. No such good stuff has been delivered so far in all of the
NGO-preparations for the Joburg meeting. I am still in the reading
and save my comments on the lines of action and recommendations
given by the document. Certainly, I can assure you that we from
UNES and Enlace SurSur shall cooperate with the Heinrich Boell Foundation
here in El Salvador in the dissemination of the document and are
looking forward to discuss the issues we want the delegates of the
civil society from CA to bring to Johannesburg. Just one thing,
please speed up the process to translate the document into Spanish
and other important languages in the South. Note: As of today, there IS a Spanish version. Download
it here. |

Restructuring the Financial Architecture |
|
|
I have downloaded and read your Jo'burg Memo which is excellent.
Indeed, the only area I found 'thin' was the discussion on Restructuring
the Financial Architecture which, while broadly on the right lines
(the idea of aiming for dollar-euro parity is mistaken) does not
go nearly far enough. So while you mention SDRs, it would be better
to go for a world currency which is distributed on the basis of
population rather than, as with SDRs, according to a nation's economic
strength. |

Tracking informaion on WSSD |

I am writing to say that I have been tracking information related
to WSSD for 10 months and think the MEMO your team has produced
and provided is one of the best documents to be written and shared
to date, well done. |

Sustainability relies on Global Partnership |
|
|
As we prepare for the Earth Summit in Johanesburg, the Joburgmemo
provides much needed insight on the issues plaguing the world today.
It will, with no doubt, form the backdrop of the Summit. The memo
is cognizant of the fact that attaining sustainable development
cannot be looked at from the point of view of one region of the
world or the other but has to be considered as a global partnership.
It is only with this realisation that today's leaders can adopt
concrete steps that identify quantifiable targets for effectively
implementing Agenda 21. |

Globalisation of Sustainability |
|
|
To fight against the economic globalization is a nonsense if at
the same time we don't fight for the globalization of sustainability.
So, the Kyoto targets will also lose sense if any reduction of CO2
emission in the 1st world will be negatively compensated in the
3rd one by the reduction of CO2 capturing done by smaller and smaller
forests. Also by additional CO2 launched through the continuing
burning and devastation of the tropical ancient forests. Under my
point of view, the matter "Forests" precedes (doesn't replace) any
other in the context of the gobal warming discution. To save the
remaining ones is more urgent than most of us can imagine and that
the world is conscious about. World priorities order should to be
reviwed. |

Urban transport, urban growth, quality of life and health |
|
|
Just took a quick oook at the Jo'burg memo and didn't see any mention
of urban transport issues, urban growth, quality of life and health
issues. With lack of physical activity becoming a global crisis
(and not just limited to obese Americans), and lack of accces to
affordable transport, and the massive challenges that increased
motorization will inflict on cities, it seems critical that enabling
bicycling and walking as primary modes of travel in urban areas
ought to be part of the agenda for Jo'burg. |

Forging a Political Strategy |

|
This document analyses and critiques the recommendations contained
in Part 5 of the Jo'Burg Memo "Fairness in a Fragile World", addressing
a) how the Memorandum recommendation relates to chair's paper and
compilation texts for PrepComm III and b) strategic considerations
for strengthening and advancing the recommendation in the Johannesburg
preparatory process in terms of how to strengthen the substance
of the recommendation and what political strategies are needed to
advance the recommendation at PrepComm IV, Johannesburg and
beyond? + [ Forging
