STAKEHOLDERS' VIEW:
EU STRATEGY FOR
SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT
Stakeholders' Views; discussion paper; joinytly issued by Friends
of the Earth Europe, the European
Environmental Bureau, Nature
Friends International and the Heinrich
Boell Foundation, Brussels Office; April 2001
The European Environmental Bureau, Friends of Nature International and
Friends of the Earth Europe have been involved in the discussion on the
EU Sustainable Development Strategy – adopted at the Gothenburg Summit
in June 2001.
The three environmental organisations mentioned above have been making
ample suggestions on how nature and environment should be covered in the
European Sustainable Development
Strategy. However, as sustainable development is to include social
and economic long term interests, the input of other stakeholders with
their views and expertise is urgently needed. Their input is necessary
to make sure that all important elements are covered, which together make
up the quality of life for Europe – seeking synergies and resolving potential
conflicts for local, national, European and global sustainable development.
This report is a first step in bringing together the opinions and contributions
from a range of stakeholders. From this overview we hope to further develop
the dialogue between the different stakeholders, aiming to define common
ground and areas of co-operation, as well as analysing potential conflicts
and exploring ways to overcome these.
