REVIEW OF IMPLEMENTATION OF THE OUTPUTS OF THE
UNITED NATIONS CONFERENCE ON ENVIRONMENT AND DEVELOPMENT
Overview Of The Changes, Trends And Initiatives Undertaken In Africa:
1992-2001; background paper by Wagaki Mwangi, issued by the Heinrich Boell
Foundation; September 2001
The paper demonstrates the challenges of assessing progress due to the
varied conceptions of sustainable development even among Africans, and
then presents a viable framework developed by Ikeme, as the basis that
could be used to assess progress made in Africa to date. The paper distinguishes
the scourge of HIV/AIDS as the greatest threat to sustainable development
in Africa. In respect to governance, the paper considers inter- and intra-state
conflicts and their relationship to natural resource management, presents
two cases of initiatives that demonstrate viable approaches to contain
them. Within the theme of globalisation, the paper concentrates on three
issues: information and communication technology (ICTs) and poverty eradication.
