Focus on NEPAD. The Forum critically examined the New Partnership
for African Development, Africas main strategic contribution for

Workshop: April 18 - 19, 2002 -- Lagos, Nigeria: The Heinrich
Boell Foundation and the Shelter Rights Iniative convened this Workshop
in oder to empower Nigerian Civil Society for a participatory role
in designing, implementing and monitoring the different aspects

Pan African Civil Society Conference towards the WSSD and beyond |

Conference: January 8 - 12, 2002 -- The conference aimed
at developing a common African agenda for the World Summit. It built
on several conferences and caucus meetings that have been held throughout
Africa, some of them with support from the Heinrich Boell Foundation.
The conference's projected outcome was a common African perspective
and position as well as a strategic agenda for lobbying on African
governments in the run up to and during the World Summit. The conference
was All-African, but hosted by the Eastern African Civil Society

The African Regional PrepComm took place October 15-18, 2001, in Nairobi, Kenya. The weekend before, African NGOs met for an African Strategy meeting organised by the Heinrich Boell Foundation as well as a regional stakeholders meeting organised by UNED Forum. MORE

The Heinrich Boell Foundation organised a pan African Caucus Meeting during October 13-14, just before the PrepComm (October 15-18) to prepare African NGOs for the PrepComm. NGO representatives from the Eastern Africa WSSD Focal Point, from SANGOCO and the SADC Civil Society Forum were present as well as representatives from North, West and Central Africa. A policy paper that resulted from the meeting fed into the UNEP NGO Forum and was used as the basis for discussion during the Forum.

Conference: September 2001 -- Sustainable Development, Governance and Globalisation: An African Forum for Strategic Thinking Towards the Earth Summit 2002 and Beyond -- This forum, organized jointly by Mazingira Institute, African Academy of Sciences (AAS), Africa Peace Forum and the Heinrich Boell Foundation, took place in Nairobi in September 2001. The focus was to facilitate strategic thinking towards sustainable development, governance, and globalisation from an African perspective. The major outputs were a vision and set of values to guide sustainable development amidst the new realities; the major policy issues to address, and the strategy choices or alternative actions that are available and their associated payoffs. An executive summary of the results of the forum was presented at the African Regional PrepComm in Nairobi October 15-18. MORE
