SHADOW REPORT: SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT IN ISRAEL
Israeli Environmental NGO's have been working on a shadow report pursuant
to the report produced by the government of Israel on the progress made
on its commitments according to Agenda 21. The initiative has been led
by Friends of the Earth
Middle East and Life and Environment, an Umbrella Organisation
for the Environmental NGOs in Israel. The Heinrich Boell Foundation is
supporting this activitiy.
The objective was to produce an independent shadow report on the
state of the environment in Israel for the World Summit that would compare
the expectations after UNCED 10 years ago with the reality today and make
recommendations for the future. The secotral reports are now available
to the right. Different NGOs have prepared the chapters according to their
expertise and experience. The report is now being distributed to government
ministries, the media and will also be spread at the World Summit itself.
The report covers areas such as Air Pollution, Transport, Agriculture
and Reforestation, Water Resources, Land Management, Seas and Land Based
Pollution, Biodiversity, Solid Wastes, Hazardous Materials, Regional Environmental
Issues, Industry and Environmental Standards, Environmental Justice, Woman
and Environment, Youth and Environment, Education, Community Participation,
Tourism etc.
Accompanying the preparation of the report, the NGO coalition has been
organising two types of roundtables: NGO capacity building, and local
stakeholder discussion on why Agenda 21 is not sufficiently advanced in
Isreal. Alongside these events, a public awareness campaign generated
interest for the shadow report. An NGO delegation sent to the World Summit
in Johannesburg will ensure that the issues of the shadow report are brought
to the table in Johannesburg.
