In general, the Arab community in Israel is not aware of the international
debates on the environment and sustainable development. The Arab community
in Israel did not participate in the 1992 Earth Summit in Rio, and is
not aware of the resolutions and implementation of Agenda 21.
As part of preparations for the World Summit on Sustainable Development,
a group of Israeli environmental organisations cooperated to prepare a
Shadow Report, designed to supplement
and clarify the country report submitted by the Ministry of the Environment.
The Shadow Report includes a section dealing with the particular issues
faced by the Arab community in Israel.
This roundtable intends to present local preparations on the World
Summit on Sustainable Development, highlighting the importance of
the World Summit as a platform for the Arab minority in Israel and its
specific problematic environmental situation. The roundtable will also
discuss the Shadow Report and give the
Alternative Planning Center the possibility to present solutions
for the problematic environmental situation, from a developmental view.
The roundtable will also bring together environmental activists in order
to initiate a forum on environment and development in the Arab sector
as a follow up to the World Summit.
