  CIVIL SOCIETY AT THE SUMMIT     ISRAEL ROUNDTABLE        

MIDDLE EAST REGIONAL ROUNDTABLES

June-August, 2002 -- The Heinrich Boell Foundation organises in co-operaion with local organisations several roundtables in the region, e.g. in Palestine, Jordan and Egypt. Focus of these roundtables lies on reviweing Agenda 21 implementation, waste and freshwater management, poverty reduction and civil society expectations and challenges for the World Summit.

In Egypt, the roundtables are organised jointly with the Ford Foundation and will take place in Jun/July 2002. The main theme of the roundtables will be combating poverty and sustainable development and address mainly NGO representatives. The Jordan roundtables are organised in co-operation Al Urdun Al Jadid Research Centre The topics to be covered by the roundtables are Agenda 21 implemantation rreview and challenges ahead, sustainable decelopment indicators/North versus South perspectives and NGO preparations and expectations for the World Summit. In Palestine, the subjects to be addressed are combating poverty, freshwater and solid waste management as well as women and youth. Again, the foucs is on NGO activists.
