THE END OF GROWTH?
WAYS OF DEVELOPMENT INTO A SUSTAINABLE FUTURE
"The End of Growth? Ways of Development into a Sustainable Future" is
the provoking title of an exhibition the Thai office of the Heinrich-Boell-Foundation
has developed. Artists from Thailand, Malaysia, Vietnam and Cambodia have
been invited to submit contributions; four countries with different cultural
backgrounds - Buddhist, Muslim and Confucian - and differing stages of
development. The idea is to shift away the discussion on growth, social
issues and the environment from the 'usual suspects' - politicians, scientists,
journalists and representatives from NGOs. Indeed, artists are predestined
to examine their environment carefully. Hence, developments, tensions
and conflicts are often anticipated in their work and, therefore, often
play an important role in social communicative processes. The approach
of the exhibition is to promote dialogue between different social groups,
to bring academics and NGO workers together with artists, stimulating
new perspectives and in-sights within the scope of a critique of the existing
development model.
