STRENGTHENING CIVIL SOCIETY IN THAILAND
In co-operation with the Ecological Support Movement Programme (ESMP),
a platform of organisations working in the field of sustainable development,
the Heinrich Boell Foundation Asia has set up a working group*
for the process leading up to the WSSD. The working group co-ordinates
the activities of Thai NGOs leading up to the summit distributes information
and relevant documents. Specific objectives and activities of this working
group are
+ to strategically collect relevant information and make it available
for stakeholders in the preparation process in Thailand and to support
organisations active in the field of sustainable development. This covers
documents such as the Agenda 21,
the Rio Declaration, UN conventions
and protocol texts, declarations of the UN process and the like. Several
of these documents are planned to be translated into Thai.
+ to support Civil Society organisations to work on the assessment
on the implementation of the results
of UNCED, specifically Agenda
21 in various sectors and eventually compile these assessments to
an alternative report on the implementation of Agenda 21 in Thailand.
+ to organise a national conference in Februar 2002 assessment reports
will be presented and discussed as well as lobbying strategies developed.
The conference also aims at public and media attention on the subject
of sustainable development.
+ to participate in subregional and regional preparatory activities
as well as PrepComm IV, to be held in Jakarta, Indonesia, ni May 2002.
A small number of representatives will also travel to Johanensburg to
participate at the WSSD.
+ to mobilise Thai civil society for a grass root approach to develop
suitable mechanisms for furthering the implementation of Agenda 21.
+ to co-operate with other like-minded Civil Society organisations
in the Asia Pacific region to develop common grounds in order to strategically
increase impact on the official process leading up to the WSSD.

NGO Network on Natural Resources and Environment, NGO Network in Thailand's
Northeast on Natural Resources and Environment, Thai Biodiversity Network,
Coordinating Committee of Student Environmental Groups in 17 Universities,
NGO Network on Consumer Rights, Focus on the Global South, Greenpeace-Thailand,
Wildlife Fund Thailand, Thai Development Support Committee, Arom Pongpangan
Foundation, Friends of Women Foundation and the Heinrich Boell Foundation.
