Several events were being held under the roof of the Peoples Earth Summit,
that became one of the major Civil Society contributions to the World
Summit. Its purpose was to launch a "Decade of Commitment" to
fairness and well-being for the whole Earth Community. Among the activities
planned for the Peoples Earth Summit were
+ The World Sustainability
Hearing -- a seven day Hearing on the true state of the world and
the actions/inactions of governments, corporations and local people
regarding sustainable development and social justice, featuring testimony
by award-winning activists and grassroots experts, international leaders
and thinkers;
+ The Second
South-South Biopiracy Summit, aiming to raise awareness, enable
information sharing, and build capacity on issues of access and benefit
sharing, as well as to facilitate the development of mutual strategies
and statements for the World Summit. The Summit also provided an important
opportunity to review the progress on implementation of the Convention
on Biological Diversity, since its adoption in Rio ten years ago.
In addition, there were many workshops on issues such as Ecological Justice,
Corporate Accountability and New Economics and so forth. Find out more
on web site
of the Peoples Earth Summit.
