THE OFFICIAL UN SUMMIT

Official UN summit
Date: August 26 to September 4
Venue: Sandton Convention Centre, Sandton, Johannesburg, South Africa
Web: http://www.johannesburgsummit.org

The official UN summit, where delegations and governments met to deliberate on the poltical declaration, the plan of implementation and the partnerhip agreements; the official summit ran from August 26 to September 4.

The official summit comprised several scenes: The plenary was the official heart of the summit. Important events took place here, although informal meeting had a lot of influence on the outcomes of the summit as well. Between the plenaries, the countries held their delegation meetings to discuss development and possible strategies. Regional groupings such as the European Union, G77/China (developing countries) and others will also had daily co-ordination meetings. Over lunchtime and in the evening, various side events took place, organised by intergovernmental organisations and the Major Groups, focusing on specific issues related to the Summit. NGOs had caucus-meetings by theme, geography or criteria such as women, indigenous peoples etc. The most important NGO meeting was the daily NGO Morning Strategy Session organised by the Sustainable Development Issues Network.

The programme of the UN summit started with informal meetings as early as August 24, and an opening event took place August 25 (in the Ubuntu Village). Partnership Events took place in the plenary hall during August 26-28 and informal negotiations on the Draft Plan of Implementation and the Political Declaration in other rooms. August 29-30 were reserved for plenaries with the possibility for NGO interventions. September 2-4 saw the ministerial level debate in the plenary (with heads of state or heads of delegations reading out statements), with a multi stakeholder event on September 4, followed by a wrapping up session.
